1. Introduction

Small bowel resection is performed for various diseases, including intestinal obstruction, small bowel tumors, abdominal trauma, stricture, adhesions, Meckel’s diverticulum, Crohn’s disease, and infection.



2. Preoperative assessment and patient preparation
a) History and physical examination: Assess fluid and hydration status. The patient may be vomiting or bleeding or may have third spacing, diarrhea, dehydration, or sepsis.

b) Diagnostic laboratory tests should include a complete blood count, electrolyte panel, coagulation panel

c) Preoperative medication and IV therapy
(1) Patients may be receiving steroid therapy or immunosuppressant drugs.
