A Comparison of Omeprazole and Placebo for Bleeding Peptic Ulcer

BACKGROUND

At the time of this article, endoscopic techniques were widely used to treat patients bleeding from a peptic ulcer. However, no specific medical therapy had been shown to be effective as an alternative for controlling ulcer-related hemorrhage and decreasing its recurrence. As platelet function is severely impaired at high pH in vitro, a potential strategy was to reduce gastric acidity to a nearly neutral pH, which could stabilize the clot over the ulcer and stop bleeding or prevent recurrence.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate whether administering a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) will stop bleeding or prevent recurrent bleeding in peptic ulcer disease (PUD).

METHODS

Double-blinded, randomized control trial at a single center between 1992 and 1994.
