should be obtained during the sterile speculum examination if there is suspicion for infection. Perineal culture for Group B streptococcus (GBS) testing should also be performed if the GBS status is unknown. A digital cervical examination is not recommended and should be avoided as it can increase the risk of introducing infection and shortens the latency period.1 In addition, a digital cervical examination rarely provides additional information to that provided by a sterile speculum examination.10
