Basic-M is a standard-weight PPM that has a rectangular shape. This material is also configured into an “inguinal” shape and a round shape as the P3 Basic and TP bidimensional plug, respectively. There are lighter-weight versions of these materials that are called Bulev, P3 Evolution, and TP dimensional plug B. Blue strips have been added to the first two products to aid in positioning and are named Bulev B and P3 Evolution B, respectively.

Bard Mesh is a heavy-weight material and Bard Soft Mesh is a lighter weight version. Both are available as a flat sheet and a preshaped version. The 4D mesh materials are partially absorbable and come in preshapes as well. Cousin Biotech also manufactures light-weight meshes that are also preshaped as Premium. Dynamesh provides two different weights and weaves of the PPM.

A variety of Hertra meshes exist, as can be seen from the table. They differ in either thickness, stiffness and/or weave. The Hertra 1, 2, and 2A are designed to be sutureless when used with the Trabucco technique. The Hertra 6, 6A, 7 materials are light and ultralight preshaped meshes that can also be used with the sutureless technique. In addition, the Hertra 9 and 9A can also be sutureless. The Oval Preshaped mesh is designed for preperitoneal repair like the Kugel technique. The T5 prosthesis is designed also to be placed into the preperitoneal position with an additional onlay of the other meshes. Hybridmesh is a newer product that is partially absorbable and may be square, rectangular or preshaped.

The Optilene and Premilene meshes are similar to the other materials in that there are different weights of the products, which have an influence in the handling characteristics of the meshes. Prolene and Prolene Soft Mesh are also comparable materials that differ in weight and weave. The Prolene is available in preshaped, square or rectangular shapes but Prolene Soft Mesh is not preshaped. Repol Angimesh materials differ in the weight and weave of the products. They are called Repol Angimesh 0 or 1 or 8 or 9. They have a similar appearance to that of the other flat sheet meshes of polypropylene.

Surgimesh WN represents a non-woven microfiber polypropylene material that is available for non-visceral contact. It is available in several configurations. It is available as a preshaped device for Lichtenstein repair or a tear drop and “wrap around flap” for laparoscopic repair. Surgipro is one of the few prolypropylene materials available from Medtronic. It is available in multifilament, monofilament and an open weave configuration for inguinal hernia repair.
