Challenges in Mechanical Ventilation in Pediatric Patients

  • Studies comparing the use of high-frequency oscillation ventilation (HFOV versus conventional mechanical ventilation (MV) in the treatment of children and adults with acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome found the following:

    (a) HFOV reduced mortality rates.


    (b) Conventional MV reduced mortality rates.


    (c) There was no difference between HFOV and conventional MV on mortality.


    (d) HFOV did not reduce mortality rates, but it did improve rates of complications such as intraventricular hemorrhage.
